The mixer has all the processing for a live show built in, but the user interface (in my opinion) is not optimal for the task. I'd never consider running a live show without my laptop attached (Ethernet connection). I've mixed several live shows including Attack Cat from Cleveland and other regional Jazz Artists. I've set the unit up for several theatre productions, and they can move from scene to scene and everything works great. If you intend on using it for unscripted live sound - you will need a computer running the interface software.

This can take 10 or 15 seconds if the highlight was down in the EQ section (lower part of the screen). For general live sound, the onboard user interface sucks! For instance, if you want phantom power on a channel, you use the cursor keys to move the highlight to the '48V' box and press enter. For theatre applications it is awesome - recall scenes, motorized faders, etc. It depends on your point of view and the intended purpose of the console. Our new high school has an LS9-32 installed in the theatre. I would not 'stay far far away' from the 01v unless you are working with riders, in which case you wouldn't be asking this question anyway because you'd probably be getting the M7. It really depends on how you're using the console as to which you should purchase. I find the LS9 to be slightly faster to work on for what I do. You can use Studio Manager with either console to see the differences and get to know the console. And when the PM1D was first introduced to the world, Yamaha demonstrated the desk by running it on a Tablet. Yamaha developed the Studio Manager program just for this reason. Like they never saw this before, is bull. It can mix up to 40 inputs with additional hardware and has 8 aux and 8 buses, not including LR. The idea that Yamaha was taken aback by their desk moving on its own. It can also be a DAW controller and has a nice little monitor section. It has delay on all inputs, which is really nice if you happen to work with video. Having said that, the 01v96 also has a great feature set. All analog I/O is on XLR connectors on the back of the console. Also, you get four additional User Defined Keys. The standout from the 01v96 is that there are 32 faders/bank instead of 16 and you can create a 'custom fader' page that has the stuff you need to get to quickly w/o having to press a bank button. You can mix up to 34 additional inputs (32 on the second layer) and spdif, but you'd have to pay extra. You can record and playback via thumbdrive.

The LS932 is a great console-32 recallable mic pres and 16 possible busses/mixes (not including LR). There is not much of a learning curve until you start doing things that are specific to digital consoles. Ok, how much of a learning curve would there be on that? He works for the biggest sound company in Canada, and says it's a nice little desk.
